Powell is a well-known unincorporated community in Knox County located on State Route 131 (Emory Road). While technically a suburb of Knoxville, Powell is considered more of an independent small town due to the fact it was established two years before Knoxville.
The community got its name from the Powell Train station, which was named after Columbus Powell, a local resident. This train station, while no longer in use, is still located in the downtown area.
The railroad was important to this community since it was the main transportation of the communities largest commodity: bricks. Bricks were made from the mud of Beaver Creek then transported all over East Tennessee, Virginia, and even Georgia.
Being a railroad community presented issues during the Civil War. One of the biggest war strategies was to take over or destroy rail lines on both the Union and Confederate sides. There are no mentions of specific attacks on that part of the railroad or community during the war, but some of the older homes in the community were believed to have been used as Confederate hospitals.
Powell is a wonderful community and a great place for you and your family to live. There are many restaurants and shopping centers in the area as well as various schools and amusements for kids.
The headquarters for Weigel's convenience stores is located in Powell as well as DeRoyal Industries, the largest employee in Powell. DeRoyal Industries manufactures medical products.
Public schools in Powell are provided and operated by the Knox County School System. Crown College is located within the community and other larger higher education options are available in Knoxville and surrounding areas. Some nearby Universities and Colleges include the University of Tennessee and Walters State Community College.
