Newport is a city of around 7,000 and is the county seat of Cocke County, Tennessee. Historically, a river crossing for the Cherokee going to their ancestral hunting grounds in northeastern Tennessee and having a section of the Great Indian Warpath running through it, Newport found itself a battleground between the Cherokee and the settlers. The river crossing was locally referred to as the "War Ford."
During the American Revolution, the Cherokee sided with the British and attacked the settlers in Newport. At the close of the war, more settlers came to Newport. After years of continuing skirmishes with the Cherokee, the settlers erected multiple forts in the area. Finally, the attacks began to subside around the year 1800, creating a peaceful country atmosphere in Newport.
The French Broad River was one of Newport's biggest assets with flatboats traveling back and forth from New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. Newport became a frequent stop for travelers along the river. With the mountain roads being difficult to traverse, river travel was the preferred mode of transportation.
Newport has many major highways running through it, making it a popular place to stop for travelers on the interstate, especially those driving from Tennessee to North Carolina.
Newport has many hotels and restaurants as well as a local Walmart.
If you are a moonshine connoisseur, there are various legal moonshine distilleries in the area. One of the most well known, themed after a notorious moonshiner in the area, is Popcorn Sutton's Whiskey.
Newport is a short drive to tourist destinations like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. There are also great opportunities for white water rafting and tubing just outside the city limits.
Newport schools are provided by the City of Newport and the Cocke County School Board.
