Alcoa is a city in Blount County with a population of around 11,000. Located between Knoxville and Maryville, and being home to McGhee Tyson Airport, Alcoa is a popular destination for many. Originally known as "North Maryville" the city was renamed for the large aluminum plant owned by the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). The city was incorporated under that name in 1919.
Being a "company town," Alcoa was almost completely dependent on the welfare of the aluminum plant. If sales were bad, the town fared poorly. If sales were good, the town's economy boomed. This became an issue during the Great Depression because the company was worried people would move elsewhere if there was no work. To prevent this, the company only cut hours instead of laying people off and made aluminum even with no demand. As a result, Alcoa had a stockpile of around 42,000 tons of aluminum during that time. Which is good, because World War II required massive amounts of aluminum to build airplanes. Once the war came around, the workforce grew to 12,000, resulting in an even higher population in and around Alcoa.
Shortly afterwards, the company ran into issues with labor unions and Alcoa shifted its focus to other means of income. This resulted in a more diversified economy and the creation of McGhee Tyson Airport.
Alcoa is nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and conveniently located to Knoxville, Maryville, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With gorgeous views of the mountains, easy access to major areas, and the added benefit of an airport, it is no wonder many choose to live and buy in Alcoa.
Locals enjoy various public parks and sporting events, offering additional opportunities to enjoy their leisure time. There are also numerous restaurants, from fast food to fine dining, and a wide variety of shopping centers.
Alcoa schools are provided by both the city of Alcoa and Blount County. There are a number of public schools and higher education options available. The University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Maryville College in Maryville are just a short drive, making Alcoa a great place for commuters to live and work.
