New Market is a tiny town in Jefferson County with a little over 1,300 people living within 4.23 square miles. The town was settled in 1788 and incorporated in 1911. If you look up New Market on the internet, you won't find much about it. With such a small town and only one red light, that makes sense. Their biggest claim to fame is the historic New Market Presbyterian Church, built in 1885, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Like any small town, though, there are secrets that only those living in or near New Market know about. One of those secrets is called Houston's Mineral Well. What's so special about a well? Other than providing some of the best tasting water in Tennessee, not much... except legend says this water will cure you of your ailments! In 1931, Mr. Houston was informed that he was dying from kidney failure. He claims to have been told by an angel to drill a well in a specific spot at a specific depth and that water would cure him. The story says he did and was miraculously cured. Once people heard about this miraculous water, they came to the area to get some for themselves. Mr. Houston built a well and charged people 50 cents a gallon. That well house still stands today and it is still 50 cents a gallon. We don't know about the legitimacy of the story - but the water sure tastes good!
If you are looking for a small town with older buildings, New Market is the place for you. It is away from the fast pace of city life but within a reasonable distance to more active destinations. New Market is a short drive to the tourist towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
New Market is also beside Cherokee lake, so for people with boats or those who like to fish, this is a good town for you!
New Market schools are provided by the Jefferson County School System. There are a few universities within an hour's drive, including the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Carson Newman University in Jefferson City, and Walters State Community College in Morristown. The closest hospital is Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City, but numerous other medical facilities are easily accessible in nearby Knoxville.
