The 2009 Economic Stimulus Legislation allows a tax credit of up to $8000 for first time home buyers (defined as having not owned a home in the last 3 years). Here are the general requirements to qualify:
- Credit is the lesser of $8000 or 10% of the cost of the home.
- Individuals who have not owned property in the last 3 years before closing qualify.
- Home must be your primary residence.
- Credit available for 2009 tax and 2010 tax on closings that occur before June 30, 2010.
- Additional $1500 tax credit is available for qualified energy saving improvements to existing primary residences.
The new bill extends the popular $8,000 buyer tax credit for first-time home, while expanding it to include credits for existing home owners. First-time buyers continue to be eligible for tax credits if they sign a contract by April 30, 2010, and close no later than June 30.
