Introduction to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Pigeon Forge, is located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Sevier County, Tennessee.  Pigeon Forge is a destination for vacationers and home to well over 5000 permanent residents.  Pigeon Forge occupies a valley along the Little Pigeon river between Sevierville and Gatlinburg. It is surrounded by high ridges on three sides:  Pine Mountain to the west, Shields Mountain to the east, and Cove Mountain to the south. The Little Pigeon river is the city's northern border with Sevierville, and a narrow gorge cut by the Little Pigeon between Cove Mountain and Shields Mountain provide the connection to Gatlinburg.  Pigeon Forge is 45 minutes from Knoxville and next door to Sevierville, Gatlinburg, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Pigeon Forge was incorporated as a city in 1961.  It takes its name from its history as the location of an iron forge established by pioneer Isaac Love in 1820 and by passenger pigeons, unfortunately now extinct, that flocked to the banks of the Little Pigeon River in earlier times.  William Love built a tub mill along the river in 1830, and this mill is now a National Historic Site, remaining operational to this day.

The broad valley occupied by Pigeon Forge provides the perfect location for the restaurants, theatres, shopping malls, and other attractions.  The city has more than 10000 lodging units, so the population can swell to as many as 50,000 because of the tourists it attracts.  Dollywood, which is inside Pigeon Forge, is Tennessee’s most visited tourist attraction.  Of course, Dolly Parton, who built Dollywood and has provided many other great benefits to her native home, is Pigeon Forge’s and Sevier County’s most famous celebrity.

Readily available to Pigeon Forge residents are the shopping and entertainment attractions of Pigeon Forge, the local golf courses, and the amenities of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  In addition, top level professional and college sports are within easy driving distance.  Lake activities are also available, as there are many lakes in East Tennessee.  Douglas Lake is just a short drive from Pigeon Forge.
