Maryville, Tennessee - IntroductionThe City of Maryville, with a population of 24,000, is located south of Knoxville in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains. Maryville was established on July 11, 1795, by an act of the General Assembly of the Territory South of the Ohio River. Located in Blount County, Maryville was named in honor of Mary Grainger Blount, wife of Governor William Blount. The county was named in honor of Governor Blount. Almost a year later, on June 1, 1796, the State of Tennessee became the 16th state in the Union. In 1819, Southern and Western Theological Seminary was opened. The name was changed to Maryville College in 1842. Maryville has an active program for preserving its heritage. This is best seen in the redevelopment and preservation of downtown Maryville. Many historic structures in downtown Maryville remain and have continuous use.
Currently, Maryville's downtown offers the community and visitors entertainment, office, restaurant, retail, recreation, government, Maryville, which operates its own independent school system, has four elementary schools, including a School of Dynamic Learning, which runs on a year-round schedule. There is one intermediate school, one middle school, and one high school. Maryville schools are known for their quality educational programs, and the entire system is ranked among the top five in the State of Tennessee.
Maryville is business friendly. Maryville is the headquarters for Clayton Homes, Inc., which employs 1500 locally and 14,000 nationwide, and for Ruby Tuesday, Inc., which has over 900 locations worldwide. Maryville is conveniently located 17 miles from downtown Knoxville, 8 miles to Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport, just 18 miles to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and 10 miles to Ft. Loudoun Lake.
