Farragut is named in honor of American Civil War Admiral David Farragut, who was born just east of Farragut at Campbell's Station in 1801. The area was originally known as Campbell’s Station. A fort and stage coach station were built there by David Campbell in 1787. The brick Campbell's Station Inn was built there in 1810 and still stands on Kingston Pike within sight of the Farragut Town Hall. It is still in use as a private residence. The Civil War Battle of Campbell's Station was fought there on November 16, 1863.

Farragut public schools are rated very highly, among the best schools in the nation. In 2008, Farragut High School had moreKnox County Branch Library at Farragut, TN National Merit semifinalists than any school in Tennessee. Part of Farragut is served by the new Hardin Valley Academy, a public school designed with advanced curriculum and facilities. Farragut is served by several private schools, and is located in close proximity to a number of colleges and universities, including Pellissippi State Technical Community College and the University of Tennessee.  Farragut has a library provided by Knox County.

Farragut has great shopping, including the $500 Million Turkey Creek shopping district, part of which is located in Farragut and part in Knoxville. Farragut is served by a wide range of restaurants located within the town and nearby. Farragut is served primarily by two nearby modern hospitals, Parkwest Medical Center and Turkey Creek Medical Center.

Farragut is conveniently located.  It borders on I-40/I-75, and is near I-140.  Average travel time to key places and venues: 15 minutes to downtown Knoxville, 25 minutes to Oak Ridge, 30 minutes to the Knoxville Regional Airport, 60 minutes to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or 90 minutes to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.   The Knoxville airport is a 25 minute drive.
